One

Starting off my 2024 NY resolution to complete one physical painting a month is an impression of a shared family memory. We used to go on holiday to Norfolk when we were young, and my two older brothers would leap off the sand dunes onto the beach below in Winterton. One day my Dad captured the action shot, their flying silhouettes against the clear blue sky, softened by the glow of the sun.

My eldest brother got me the canvas for Christmas which put the idea for the painting challenge into my head. He turned 30 this month so I thought I’d gift him this moment of family, freedom and the great outdoors for his city-based dwelling.

I think my recent foray into digital drawing has improved my understanding of form and building a figure, which I was previously hesitant to put to paper. I opted for an off-centre composition to try and emphasise the flight and movement. I was happy to have a source where I could use lots of one of my favourite paint colours - wedgewood. A warm blue with an opaque finish that provides depth from the first coat. Roll on February…
